Hawaii - Cyber Diver Top 10 Dive Destination >>

ou don't go to Hawaii to go scuba diving.  You go to Hawaii AND you go diving. There are just too many attractive possibilities to be content with a dive-only holiday. The best way to do Hawaii is to do it all, from riotous nightlife and humpback whales, to skiing down snowcapped volcanos and blue water diving where depths are measured in miles rather than feet.  You won't find anything like it in the Caribbean nor anywhere else on the face of the planet.

Like every other tropical island destination with a tourist bureau and a tax-funded advertising budget, Hawaii describes itself as an earthly paradise.  Mass tourism, overdevelopment and the influx of American shopping mall franchisers have destroyed much that was uniquely Hawaiian, but in one sense, at least, the P-word is apt.

For what is most unique and uniquely attractive about Hawaii is not its white sand beaches, blue seas and lush green mountains.  These exist elsewhere.  What makes Hawaii so special is its East meets West melting pot society where people genuinely take pride in their multiracial, multiethnic and multicultural background.

Hawaii also has the world's perfect climate thanks to steady northeast tradewinds and its location some 20 degrees north of the equator. Unlike many other tropical holiday destinations that are oppressively hot and humid, Hawaii is balmy, dry on the leeward sides of the islands, and naturally air-conditioned by steady trade winds.

Although Hawaii includes 128 islands that stretch 2450 km from Kure Atoll in the north to the Big Island in the south, only Midway and the six main islands of Oahu, Maui, Hawaii, Kauai, Molokai and Lanai attract tourists and dive travelers.  There are at least 200 dive centers throughout the islands and a wealth of dive sites so no matter where you go, you'll find plenty of options to fit your style of diving.

A short list of good diving sites would have to include Kealakekua Bay, Pentagon and the ever popular Manta night dive, all on the Kona coast of the Big Island. Cathedrals off Lanai and the outside wall of Molokini Crater are popular though somewhat crowded dive sites for Maui divers. Oahu divers have the best wrecks including the Mahi and YO-257.  Strong winds and big waves usually determine the selection of dive sites in Kauai.

When to Go

Best time to visit the Hawaiian Islands is anytime.  The Christmas/New Year holiday can be crowded and there are fewer tourists on the islands from May through September.
