In Truk Lagoon, tools of violence and destruction have been transformed into astonishingly beautiful living ecosystems. Just 55+ years ago, this remote archipelago was the Pacific base of Japan's naval fleet. Then it all came to an abrupt and violent end in February 1944 when American forces sank much of the Japanese war fleet. Lying on the bottom of Truk Lagoon, the World War II wrecks are gradually disintegrating and in their place, nature is creating complex and extraordinary ecosystems that are uniquely fascinating and beautiful.
