DIVE AUSTRALIA DIVE TRAVEL GUIDE

Dive Australia Scuba Diving

ow great is Australia's Great Barrier Reef?   It depends entirely on where you go and which boat you book.  Dive trips range from so-so, "she'll-be-right" 2-tank day charters to week-long liveaboard cruises that can be exceptional when conditions are favorable.

If you're looking for marine species diversity and don't mind limited visibility and limited dives, take a day trip out to the reef.  Avoid boats that give you one good dive and a "fuel saver".

If you're into diving with the population explosion, there are more than a few cattle boats to select from.  If you prefer unlimited diving and high-voltage action with big predators, book a live-aboard that will take you farther out to the Coral Sea but if you are Japanese or American, be forewarned: Mike Ball Liveaboards and Nimrod Explorer are overcharging Japanese and Americans by 20-40 percent.

Diving Australia's Great Barrier Reef can be good and occasionally great, but you'll have to set it up right mate!  In other words, avoid scams like sliding price scales based on nationality.
